Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a form of acquired brain injury that occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. The damage can be focal - confined to one area of the brain - or diffuse - involving more than one area of the brain.

In USA alone, TBI costs the country more than $56 billion a year, and more than 5 million Americans alive today have had a TBI resulting in a permanent need for help in performing daily activities. Survivors of TBI are often left with significant cognitive, behavioral, and communicative disabilities, and some patients develop long-term medical complications, such as epilepsy. Like Spinal Cord Injury, patients who suffered from this type of injury is only left with one choice, risky and extensive neurosurgery and years of possible rehabilitation if the surgery is successful, which, statistics say is marginally low.

Disabilities resulting from a TBI depend upon the severity of the injury, the location of the injury, and the age and general health of the patient. Some common disabilities include problems with cognition (thinking, memory, and reasoning), sensory processing (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), communication (expression and understanding), and behavior or mental health (depression, anxiety, personality changes, aggression, acting out, and social inappropriateness). Within days to weeks of the head injury approximately 40 percent of TBI patients develop a host of troubling symptoms collectively called post concussion syndrome (PCS).

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF STEM CELL IN THE TREATMENT FOR BRAIN INJURY?

For the longest time, scientists and doctors believe that brain cells do not regenerate, however, with recent developments in medicine, it was found out that certain areas and cells in the brain do in fact grow and regenerate, however, it is still too early to claim victory since researchers have yet to find a way to introduce the cells that can regenerate to the area of the brain that needs it the most. Another dilemma is that after introduction, the survival of the cells will also be a question.

In clinical researcher however, a stem cell treatment known as multipotent adult progenitor cell (MAPC) therapy has been found to reduce inflammation in mice immediately after traumatic brain injury, but no one had been able to gauge its usefulness over time since the study was halted. Initial findings claim that they noted improved spatial learning, improved motor deficits and fewer active antibodies in the mice that were given the stronger concentration of MAPCs.

In a separate trial, researchers randomly assigned rats with traumatic brain injury and confirmed neurological impairment to one of two groups. One group received transplants of bone marrow-derived stem cells (SB632 cells) into the region of the brain affected by traumatic injury. The other (control group) received a sham procedure in which solution alone was infused into the brain with no implantation of stem cells. At one and three months post-TBI, the rats receiving stem cell transplants showed significantly better motor and neurological function and reduced brain tissue damage compared to rats receiving no stem cells.

Though human trial is not yet done, researchers are hoping that soon, they will find a means to deliver stem cells more effectively and safely for human health development.

WHAT CAN YOSKARN CLINIC OFFER?

Yoskarn Clinic offers stem cell therapy using different types of stem cells in the body. These stem cells are harvested and processed in the biggest, most advanced laboratories in Thailand before being used by our patients.

Though stem cell therapy is not a cure for different diseases, its therapeutic benefits had been appreciated by our patients from all over the world. We offer intravenous injection of Stem Cells as a holistic approach along with a specialized introduction of stem cells for specific health concerns.
