A stroke or "brain attack" occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery (a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body) or a blood vessel (a tube through which the blood moves through the body) breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain.  When either of these things happen, brain cells begin to die and brain damage occurs. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost.  These abilities include speech, movement and memory.

Stroke is actually the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S. After a patient suffers from stroke, several changes in motor skills can occur such as weakness (hemiparesis) or paralysis (hemiplegia) on one side of the body that may affect the whole side or just the arm or leg, this weakness or paralysis is on the side of the body opposite the side of the brain affected by the stroke. Patients can also experience spasticity, stiffness in muscles, and painful muscle spasms. Problems with balance and/or coordination are also one of the common effects of stroke on patients. However, how a stroke patient is affected depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged.

Problems using language, including having difficulty understanding speech or writing (aphasia); and knowing the right words but having trouble saying them clearly (dysarthria), is one of the effects of stroke in the cognitive part of our brain along with memory lapses and attention deficit, and difficulties with learning are also some of the possible problems that may arise as a result of stroke.

Other less common effects are depression, fatigue, and having difficulty controlling emotion.

Currently the only way to treat stroke with a chance of success is to give patients a clot-busting agent within hours of the stroke. Apart from that, the only treatment is rehabilitation to help patients manage their disabilities. Though some patients recover from the effects of stroke and are able to regain some of their lost abilities, most patients become plagued by the problems brought by the condition all throughout their lives.

WHAT CAN STEM CELL DO TO HELP TREAT THE EFFECTS OF STROKE?

In 2010, a stem cell trial for one stroke patient was conducted, and by 2012, 6 patients are now part of the ongoing trial. Initial reports claim that 5 of the 6 patients are showing significant improvement while there had still been no noted adverse effect of the treatment.

In a separate research, a group of doctors launched a study that claims that so-called induced pluripotent stem cells have developed to mature nerve cells at two months after transplantation into the stroke-injured cerebral cortex of rats. These nerve cells have established contact with other important structures in the brain and the transplantation gave rise to improvement of the animals' mobility.

In human trial, stem cell treatment has an effectiveness rate of 70.4% to 73.8% for cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage. Improvements are seen such as reduced muscle tension, increased muscle strength, improved blood circulation in the periphery of limbs, improved coordination and body posture, ability to stand with less assistance, improved hand movements and fine motor skills in the fingers, improved leg movements, improved speech and decreased features of facial palsy, and improved sensation in the face and limbs

WHAT CAN YOSKARN CLINIC OFFER?

At Yoskarn Clinic, we work closely with our patients by providing all information relevant to electing undergoing stem cell therapy. We always make sure that patients understand that stem cell therapy is not a direct treatment but an alternative form of therapy for those who are looking into trying to improve their lives.

We offer no guarantee that the treatment will work in the same manner for everyone but our record and patient feedback had been positive ever since we started offering the treatment.

We do offer stem cell therapy in the form of cord blood, adipose, mesenchymal, and bone marrow stem cells depending on the need of the patients. We introduce stem cells by intravenous injection throughout the body and specific introduction to the target organs via a special route.
