Circumcision

 

In the earlier days, medical practitioners believed that being circumcised would be more hygienic, but over the years, the medical community changed their view and a faction arise between those believing in the importance of circumcision and those questioning its medical benefits. The disagreement stems from the idea that the risks associated with circumcision outweighs its benefits.

Aside from the medical point of view, there are religious and cultural factors that play part in the importance of having circumcision. More often, those whose religion believes that circumcision is important passage of manhood have the procedure as newborns or pre-teens, while those who believes otherwise are free to have the surgery later in life. One of the arguments with offering circumcision for newborns is that it takes away one’s right to make informed medical decisions since the procedure is not actually a matter of life and death. This gave way for other cultures to encourage circumcision at a later age, when a man can already make personal choices about their body.

Circumcision in Thailand is the removal of the foreskin, the skin that covers the tip of the penis. Since the penis can function the same way with or without the foreskin, the procedure has always been a matter of personal (traditional or cultural) choice, unless the patient suffers from Phimosis, a condition wherein the foreskin cannot be retrated and may cause disruption of the urine and discomfort during sexual activity or even urination.

 

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING CIRCUMCISION in Thailand?

Medical experts advocating circumcision believe that the procedure gives the following benefits:

·   1. Better hygiene – since it will be easier to clean the penis because all skin area is already exposed.

·   2. Decreased risk of UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) – though UTI is relatively of low incidence in male, it is still significantly more common on uncircumcised men.

·   3. Decreased risk of STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) – the chances of having HIV is said to be higher in men who are uncircumcised though safe sexual practices is still the best preventive measure.

·   4. No risk for phimosis - phimosis is the condition wherein the foreskin cannot be retracted causing inflammation on the head of the penis.

·  5. Decreased the risk of penile cancer – though rare, penile cancer is also more prevalent in uncircumcised male as cervical cancer is also more common for those with uncircumcised sexual partners.

 

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF CIRCUMCISION?

Most of the disadvantages of circumcision lie on the possible risks associated with the surgery such as possible infection, which, with today’s medical and surgical practice, along with the expertice of our surgeons at Yoskarn Clinic, is very rare. Some also claims that a circumcised penis is less sensitive but this is not a proven theory.

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CIRCUMCISION in Thailand?

The benefits of circumcision are still under debate between the medical community so the decision to undergo the procedure is mostly a personal choice if not for the cultural and religious factors. The surgery itself is a minor procedure that will only require local anesthesia though some patients may prefer to use general anesthesia. Recovery for the procedure will take about 7 days (suture removal). 

Patients who had undergone circumcision in Thailand are also advised to avoid engaging in sexual activity for at least 4 weeks to allw the incision site to heal.

 

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER CIRCUMCISION in Thailand?

It may take 10-14 days for the penis to heal nut your 1 week stay in Bangkok will be enough to have the sutures removed do you can gi back to your country. Redness and swelling are normal in the first week after the procedure and these will gradually subside during the 2nd week of recovery. Pain is also to be expected though it can be managed by oral pain relievers.

You can take a shower right after the procedure as long as you make sure the bandage and the incision site will remain dry.

Erection may be a little painful especially during the first few days due to the pulling of the sutures. For patients who are already sexually active, sexual activity is not advisable for at least 4 weeks after circumcision to make sure the incision has already fully healed.

Your underwear should be just tight enough to hold the penis in place to avoid unnecessary friction which may cause pain or bleeding. Pointing the penis upwards will ease the discomfort a lot and promote faster healing as the lymph will drain faster and thus reduce swelling as well.

Urinating may prove a feat post-operatively but it will return to normal in a few days.

The result will settle in 3-6 months and though results may vary in terms of appearance, any pain or discomfort related to the surgery should be gone by this time.
