Understanding Melasma

We all dream of having clear, smooth, and radiant skin. However, sometimes skin discoloration can appear despite our best skincare efforts. One of the most common causes of uneven skin tone among women is melasma — a condition characterized by brown or grayish patches, typically on the upper cheeks, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip.

Melasma most commonly affects women aged 20 to 50, and is especially prevalent during pregnancy — earning it the nickname “the mask of pregnancy.”

Other possible causes include:

  • Frequent or prolonged sun exposure

  • Hormonal changes due to birth control pills or pregnancy

  • Certain medications

  • Genetic predisposition

  • Darker skin tone, which has a higher likelihood of developing melasma

Diagnosis of Melasma

Melasma is usually diagnosed through visual examination of its distinctive pigmentation patterns.

During consultation, your dermatologist may use a Wood’s Lamp (UV light) to assess how deeply the pigment extends into your skin layers.
In rare or unclear cases, a skin biopsy may be performed, particularly when previous treatments have failed to work effectively.

Melasma Treatment Options at Yoskarn Clinic

At Yoskarn Clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of melasma treatments customized to your skin type and severity of pigmentation.

1. Hydroquinone Creams

Hydroquinone is a medical-grade skin-lightening cream that works by blocking the enzyme responsible for pigment formation. It’s often prescribed for freckles, sun spots, and discoloration caused by pregnancy or hormonal changes.

  • Before using, apply a small amount to test for irritation or allergy.

  • If well tolerated, apply as directed on the affected areas.

  • Avoid sun exposure during treatment, as it can counteract results and cause sensitivity.

2. Laser Treatments

Laser therapy helps lighten melasma by breaking up pigment particles in the skin.
At Yoskarn Clinic, we offer two laser programs for melasma:

  • Program 1: Treats melasma in a single intensive session. This may cause a temporary scab that naturally falls off in about one week.

  • Program 2: A gentler, gradual lightening process using a different laser type with no scabbing but less complete pigment removal.

Typically, 3–5 sessions are recommended, depending on your skin tone and response. Patients should avoid sun exposure after each session.

While lasers can lighten pigmentation effectively, complete or permanent removal cannot always be guaranteed, as melasma may recur.

3. Focus Dermabrasion – Curative Treatment

Dermabrasion is a surgical exfoliation technique that removes the upper skin layers to reveal fresh, even-toned skin beneath.

From our clinical experience, we have developed a unique method called Focus Dermabrasion, which has been shown to completely cure melasma — with no recurrence, even after sun exposure or hormonal fluctuations.

During the procedure, a dermabrader (a medical abrasive tool) is used to precisely remove damaged layers.
Patients need to stay in Bangkok for at least 7 days post-surgery, as bandages remain for a week during healing.

Expected Results

The goal of melasma treatment is to lighten and even out skin pigmentation.
Depending on your condition, your dermatologist will design a personalized treatment plan.

Results may include:

  • Reduction or elimination of dark patches

  • Improved skin tone uniformity

  • Healthier, rejuvenated skin appearance

For maintenance, we offer dermatologist-formulated creams to minimize recurrence after laser or dermabrasion treatments.
